BARE™ Trials 2012
By invitation only and exclusively to BARE™ subscribers/fans, Bittylab scheduled the BARE™ trials 2012. Only 200 lucky moms will get to try BARE™ for the first time with their babies. Invitations were sent at the beginning of the month and I can’t tell you how thrilled we are with the number of responses we received.
Initiating the breastfeeding relationship
The first hours of life are critical to establishing a successful breastfeeding relationship between you and your baby. Find out if your hospital (if delivering in a hospital) supports breastfeeding. Hospitals that do, will not offer your baby any formula. I gave birth at NYU Medical Center, which does offer the formula option. As such, when we checked in the nursers consulted with me to see if I wanted to breastfeed or formula-feed. I made it clear to them that I wanted to breastfeed exclusively. I went so far as to create a sign, printing 2 copies and placing them inside and out of the hospital bassinet.Best Baby Bottle of 2012 and beyond

Hi readers, yes... I hear you. Lots of you are asking “where can I buy it, I need it NOW.” Well we are working at the speed of light to bring you BARE as soon as we can. As I mentioned before BARE is going thru rigorous tests to perform its best. A safe assumption is that we will have distribution in the summer/fall.

ABC Kids Trade Show, September 23-26
The ABC Kids Trade Show is coming up in a few weeks and Bittylab will introduce BARE air-free baby bottles to the world!!!
Our booth is an endcap located between the "modern child" section and "new products" booth #4057. Designing the booth is a challenging but fun assignment, I like to think that the BARE bottle makes a sterile but elegant fashion statement. I think I'll have giant images on the back wall. I love QR codes, I have to create a few for v-card, website and press info. I have to design all the collateral, I think a beautiful and delicate brochure will do the job. I should probably take dolls to demonstrate the product?? The whole booth should be white and my custom "Turk" scheme. Hope to see you all there!!

July... Oh my!!
Dear readers July has been really busy for me. Between manufacturing negotiations, retail logistics and fundraising, I barely had time for anything else. I'm pleased to announce that hundreds of moms who hear about BARE air-free tell me they loooooooooove the product. My kickstarter inbox is over flowing with loving emails wishing me luck and telling me how much they wish this product was around when they needed it.
We are now in the process of manufacturing BARE. It took 2 years of research and interviews to select the US manufacturer that can make this bottle with the latest advancements in technology and co-molding capabilities in-house. Very soon we will have our first BARE bottles ever made in production scale, I'm soooooo excited!!
I've begun talking to capital investors about funding the bigger production in 2013. I'm sure my quest for funding will generate interesting material for future Bittylab blog updates. I should check out Sharktank!!

Who is Priska Diaz
I'm Priska, mom of Carlton & Adriana. Also the Designer and Creator of BARE air-free baby bottle. When I gave birth to Carlton, my first son, I had already decided he'll be 100% breastfed, 3 days later I introduced sips of water to satisfy a dryness in his mouth. At the 7-day visit, the pediatrician told us Carlton was loosing weight, his dry mouth was a sign of poor nutrition and I must supplement with formula. Reluctantly, I became a combo mom and found that every time I bottle fed Carlton I turned him into a bag of gas leading to frustration and sleepless nights for the 3 of us. That's when the designer in me took over & invented a baby bottle that functioned & felt like the breast to dispense air-free milk. "My breasts don't have air-vents, why should baby bottles?" was the question that started it all.
Bond with your baby, go BARE!
Bonding with your baby is probably one of the most pleasurable aspects of infant care. You can begin by cradling your baby and gently stroking him or her in different patterns. If you and your partner both hold and touch your infant frequently, your little one will soon come to know the difference between your touches. Each of you should also take the opportunity to be "skin to skin" with your newborn by holding him or her against your own skin when feeding or cradling.
When a mom breastfeeds her baby, bonding may come naturally. But for the other 70% of parents, BARE air-free baby bottles offer the closest experience to breastfeeding. The tip of the nipple extends up to 2 times inside the baby’s mouth, just like a mother’s breast. BARE dispenses milk upon suction only, and 100% air-free. Mother’s breasts store milk in glands called lobes, they dispense milk upon suction only and 100% air-free. CTV News Edmonton reported about new research, recently published in the Journal of Pediatrics, which links baby bottle use in toddlers to obesity:
“A large new study finds that kids who were still being put to bed with a bottle of milk at age two were more than 30 per cent more likely to be obese by the time they were five.
The study authors conclude that prolonged bottle use may lead to the child taking in too many calories each day. It may also train the children -- and perhaps their parents -- to use food and drink to comfort the children.”

Additionally, BARE air-free allows baby to feed in a more natural, upright position for better digestion and helps avoid the unhealthy habit of infants feeding in lie down position. Babies who are fed with BARE bottles may transition to straws and open cups earlier than babies who are fed with conventional vented bottles.
Vented baby bottles may contribute to the problem stated by this study because of the excessive amounts of milk dispensed and gravity-based feeding that drives infants and toddlers to feed in an unhealthy lie down position.
“The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that parents avoid putting their child to bed with a bottle to prevent tooth decay. The Canadian Pediatric Society also recommends beginning the transition to a sippy cup after six months and, if needed, using water in a baby bottle at bedtime.”

Encouraging breastfeeding
As I’m designing the perfect baby bottle, part of my mission is to promote breast feeding or at least pumping or expressing milk. My sister had her first baby six weeks before I did. She had a fever while delivering her baby and for that reason the baby was kept in ICU for 2 days. Although she was constantly there and trying to breast feed her baby, the nurses bottle fed her baby a few times. The combination of her baby preferring the bottle over her breast and cracked/sore nipples swayed my sister away from breast feeding.
The way I’m designing the nipple to perform on this baby bottle works so similar to the breast that it even trains the baby to latch on properly in order to feed. This may actually help alleviate the initial nipple soreness that breast feeding moms often experience due to improper latching and may encourage new moms to continue breast feeding without giving up due to discomfort. One of the rigorous tests that I’m putting this bottle thru is to prove this point and I will be able to claim: “99% of newborns that were fed with bittylab’s baby bottle were proven to have better latching on mom’s breast making the experience pleasurable without the expected nipple soreness”… stay tuned!!

Most user friendly Baby bottle
My apologies readers, I'm a little behind on this blog. The baby bottle needs to go back to the drawing table because I want this to be the most user-friendly baby bottle. I'm trying to reduce the number of components by co-molding parts comprised of two different materials. It costs more to manufacture but I think it’s worth the extra expense. For example, the nipple and collar should be one piece, all sealants and gaskets should be permanently part of the main piece, the nipple doesn't screw on; it snaps on with a slight push, etc. I remember being at a dinner with Carlton, he was about 3 months, I was holding him and trying to make his bottle with one hand but it turned into mission impossible!! I ended up putting my baby down on the bench to prepare his bottle. At the same time, another mom was trying to do the same; she had her baby in a baby carriage that was awkwardly placed in a highly trafficked area and being accidentally kicked every time someone went by. Why can't one have it all? I thought to my self. A baby bottle should be one-hand operation and a baby carrier should be able to convert into a smaller unit to fit in confined areas. The list of Bittylab projects grows. I want to do everything at once but I remind myself; one step at a time. Baby bottle first.
